Digicel launches GSM in 3 more countries

KINGSTON, Jamaica-Caribbean carrier Digicel Group plc launched mobile service in three new countries: Anguilla, Bermuda and St. Kitts & Nevis.

Digicel acquired Cingular Wireless L.L.C.’s Caribbean and Bermuda operations earlier this year, allowing the company to expand its GSM service. Recent license acquisitions in Trinidad & Tobago and Haiti put the company on track to operate in 15 countries by early 2006. It currently serves 11 island nations.

“Our industry-leading service and unmatched customer care continue to put us in a position of strength as we roll out a seamless telecommunications network throughout the pan-Caribbean region,” said Denis O’Brien, founder and chairman of Digicel.

Digicel, which was launched in 2001, reports that it has gained an average 62-percent market share across all the islands where it operates. The company provides service for nearly 1.4 million Jamaican customers through Digicel Jamaica, its flagship operation.
