TAIPEI, Taiwan-Motorola Inc. announced the launch of its commercial UMTS system across the island of Taiwan, saying it deployed a third-generation network and handsets within 9 months of signing a contract with service operator VIBO Telecom.
“The launch of island-wide UMTS service affirms VIBO and Motorola’s leading position in bringing innovative UMTS services to end-users, and marks another milestone for Motorola’s support of 3G deployment worldwide,” said Simon Leung, regional president of Motorola Asia Pacific. “Our innovative products and global network experience enable Motorola to best support customers such as VIBO to rapidly and cost-effectively launch 3G networks.”
“Launching 3G with our attractive package of new services will enable VIBO to capture significant market share,” said David Want, general manager of VIBO.
VIBO has about 1.5 million subscribers in Taiwan.
