Sprint Nextel gain government approval for Alamosa acquisition

WASHINGTON, D.C.-Federal anti-trust officials have opted not to take any action against Sprint Nextel Corp’s acquisition of the carrier’s largest CDMA affiliate, Alamosa Holdings Inc.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission gave notice that the officials had completed their examination of the transaction and made no move to block it.

The $4.3 billion deal announced last month is expected to close in the first quarter of 2006.

Sprint Nextel announced earlier this week that it had agreed on an acquisition price of its iDEN affiliate Nextel Partners Inc. The agreement calls for Sprint Nextel to pay $6.5 billion for the 68 percent of Nextel Partners it does not currently control. That deal is expected to close next year.
