IBM top patent recipient in 2005

WASHINGTON-IBM Corp. received the most patents last year from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, earning almost twice the number of patents as the nation’s No. 2 patent recipient Canon Inc.

IBM has topped the USPTO’s list every year for the past 13 years. In 2005, the company received 2,941 patents. Canon received 1,828 patents.

Other companies that received large numbers of patents last year included Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. with 1,688, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. with 1,641 and Intel Corp. with 1,549. Matsushita sells wireless phones and infrastructure, as does Samsung. Intel sells chips for mobile phones.
