New Nokia clamshell dials up Flash support

ESPOO, Finland-Nokia Corp. released a new clamshell-style phone that features quad-band GSM support, 1.3 megapixel digital camera, Bluetooth, a digital music player and the Macromedia Flash player. The company did not say where it would sell the phone, but that it would ship in the second quarter for $279.

“The new Nokia 6125 successfully blends excellent functionality with compact style-key criteria for consumers of a ‘classic’ mobile phone. With its strong set of features, the Nokia 6125 is an ideal tool for consumers to manage their everyday work and personal life and is a great addition to our highly popular mid-range portfolio,” said Aage Snorgaard, senior vice president for Nokia’s phone business

Nokia’s new phone is notable for several reasons. First, it features a clamshell-style design, which Nokia has previously eschewed for candybar-style phones. However, the company recently has been working to expand its range of clamshell-style phones, which it calls “folds.”

Second, Nokia’s phone features the Macromedia Flash player. Flash technology is used extensively on the Internet to display pictures and animations, and Macromedia has been working to sell a scaled-down version of its Flash player to wireless companies. Flash on mobile phones has caught on in Japan, but not in the rest of the world. However, Nokia’s Flash-capable phone may indicate the handset manufacturer’s new enthusiasm toward the technology, which could help push Flash into other parts of the world.

Flash vendor Macromedia was recently purchased by Adobe Systems Inc.
