Technology advancements spur revenue leakage, research shows

HAMPSHIRE, United Kingdom-New technologies and products are bringing the promise of fresh revenue-but are also producing revenue losses, according to a report by Juniper Research.

Traditional revenue-assurance safeguards, ones designed to prevent leakage from fraud and billing errors, “are now inadequate to deal with newer forms of leakage such as those arising from data services, implementing third party services, IP and premium rate services,” the analyst company said. Some of the problems include incompatible operating systems and network elements, new products and tariffs, and ever more sophisticated fraud strategies that make use of premium rate services, Juniper said.

“Preventing and reducing revenue leakage is not achievable by simply purchasing software solutions,” said analyst Arun Dehiri of Juniper. “Operators need to adopt a holistic, pragmatic framework.”

Poorly run revenue-assurance programs can end up costing companies more than they lost in the first place, he warned.
