RESTON, Va.-Sprint Nextel Corp. is carrying forward the battle against companies that offer cellular phone records for a price. The carrier filed for injunctions against a private investigation company called All Star Investigations Inc. that allegedly uses deception to obtain customers’ call records.
According to Sprint Nextel, ASI is “believed to own and/or operate Web sites including www.onlinePI.com, www.allstarinvestigations.com, www.detectivesusa.com, www.miamiprotection.com and www.privatedetectivesusa.com.
“These sites fraudulently obtain and sell wireless customer call detail records,” Sprint Nextel said in a statement. The company has filed a complaint in Dade County, Florida accusing ASI of using “flagrant misrepresentation and deceitful practices” to get access to records. Sprint Nextel is seeking temporary and permanent injunctions against ASI.
The filing is the latest in a series of moves on the topic. Wireless carriers have been filing suit against online data brokers, while legislators and government agencies have been considering taking action on the issue.
