PHOENIX-Software developer EQO Communications announced a new Java application for mobile phones that the company said allows Skype users to place and receive Skype calls from their mobile phone.
EQO said it is offering the service for free during a trial period. The company did not say if it would begin charging for the application after the trial period, or how long the trial period would last.
EQO said the application connects a mobile phone user to their Skype Internet-calling account. Users must download software to their PC as well as a Java application to their phone to use the service. The company said its Mobile Internet Phone Service allows mobile phone users to check on their Skype buddy lists and make and receive Skype calls on a SkypeOut account.
The service essentially routes Skype Internet calls through a cellular network and into the phone’s Java application. The service uses both voice and data channels, and EQO suggests that heavy users purchase an unlimited wireless data plan from their cellular carrier to avoid excessive data charges.
