German telecom vendor Teles sues Nokia over VoIP phone

BERLIN—Telecommunications technology company Teles AG filed a lawsuit against Nokia Corp. alleging the company’s new dual-mode GSM/Wi-Fi device infringes on Teles’ Voice over IP “lineswitching” patent.

A Nokia representative said the company has not reviewed the complaint and therefore could not comment on it.

Teles said Nokia’s newly launched 6126 phone—which allows users to place voice calls on cellular networks as well as Wi-Fi networks—infringes on its VoIP patents from 1996. The company said it filed the suit against Nokia in a German court but said it also plans to file similar complaints against Nokia—the world’s largest handset manufacturer—in U.S. courts as well. Teles warned it may also attack other VoIP phone providers.

Teles said its patent covers technology that transmits voice calls over a packetswitching network and then hands a call over to a lineswitching network if the quality of the Internet connection becomes poor.
