BEIJING—Motorola Inc. announced it opened another research and development center in China, this one in the Binjiang District of Hangzhou’s Hi-tech Industry Development Zone. The center will focus on developing equipment products for China’s operators.
Motorola said the new center will increase the number of its Chinese engineering force by around 10 percent.
“To best meet customer needs and generate high return on investment, China’s operators not only want 3G technologies; they are looking into the opportunities created by other networks and services,” said Simon Leung, regional president of Motorola Asia Pacific. “With the establishment of the new Hangzhou R&D center, Motorola is taking another step toward addressing the specific needs of operators in the China market by developing seamless mobility strategies that will generate new sources of revenue and differentiate service offerings.”
Motorola’s first R&D center in China was established in 1993; the Motorola China R&D Institute was founded in 1999.
Motorola’s investment in China comes as no surprise. The country is the world’s largest market, and the rest of the world’s network equipment makers have invested a notable amount of time and money on the country.
