Digicel expands Caribbean GSM footprint

ANTIGUA & BARBUDA, Caribbean—Regional operator Digicel Group has launched wireless service on the Caribbean islands of Antigua and Barbuda. The company acquired Caribbean and Bermuda assets from Cingular Wireless L.L.C. and is in the process of investing $6 million to enhance and expand the GSM network in the region.

Digicel planned several large events to mark the launch, including a free public concert today involving Caribbean artists Alison Hinds and Morgan Heritage. That event is expected to draw more than 12,000 people.

“Our speed to market and ability to create brand loyalty is key to our success in the region,” said Denis O’Briend, chairman and founder of Digicel Group, adding that the company continues “to pursue our goal of developing a seamless pan-Caribbean network, and beyond.”

According to Digicel, the company has invested about $1 billion in the region and plans to expand its employee base of 1,500 by about a third by early 2007.
