Weekly infrastructure awards wrap-up

The following list details this week’s infrastructure awards for the cellular, Wi-Fi and WiMAX industries. The contracts are broken down by transmission technology, country and vendor. The value of the contract is included when available.

Cellular

  • China: Alcatel said it won two contracts in China with China Mobile subsidiary Shanxi Mobile Communication Co. Ltd. One contract calls for Alcatel to expand Shanxi MCC’s GSM network, including base stations and base station controllers in Yuncheng, Luliang, Linfeng, Jincheng, Changzhi, Xinzhou and Jinzhong. The second contract calls for the company to provide GSM/GPRS spares for the company’s existing network maintenance. Together the contracts are valued at about $29 million.

     

  • Israel: Nortel Networks Ltd. said it has deployed a high-speed network based on HSDPA technology for Partner Communications, which operates under the Orange brand name.

     

  • Palestine: L.M. Ericsson said it won a contract to expand Jawwal’s GSM and GPRS networks to include EDGE capabilities. The contract is valued at $23 million.

     

  • The Netherlands: Ericsson said it signed a managed services contract with Vodafone Netherlands making Ericsson responsible for the management of the access portion of Vodafone Netherlands’ GSM, GPRS and UMTS radio networks.

 

Wi-Fi

  •  

  • North America: Boingo Wireless said it added seven North American airports to its roaming network via network expansions made by its roaming partners. The company said its Wi-Fi coverage now includes 125 North American airports and 225 airports worldwide.

     

  • United States: Chevron Energy Solutions said it entered a contract with the city of Burleson, Texas, to construct a Wi-Fi network and implement an automatic water meter reading pilot project.

 

WiMAX

  •  

  • Italy: IBAX Group placed an order with Navini Networks for the company’s Ripwave MX pre-mobile WiMAX solution as IBAX moves forward with plans to launch and expand municipal and resort networks in Italy as well as build out nationwide solutions for the Public Administration in Italy.

Miscellaneous

  •  

  • India: Bharti Tele-Ventures signed a five-year managed services agreement with Nortel Networks calling for the vendor to host contact-center services for the carrier’s 19.7 million mobile, broadband and fixed-line subscribers.
