Microsoft’s wireless biz sees expanding losses

REDMOND, Wash.-Microsoft Corp. said its Mobile and Embedded Devices unit operating loss widened during its fiscal third quarter ended March 31.

The company reported a $14 million loss for the unit, an increase from the $9 million loss it reported during the same quarter last year.

However, the company said revenue for the quarter grew 46 percent across the Windows Mobile and Embedded product lines and that the unit experienced 40 percent year-over-year growth for the fourth consecutive quarter.

Companywide revenues were up 13 percent to $10.9 billion for the quarter from $9.62 billion during the same quarter last year. Analysts had expected revenues of $11.04 billion.

Microsoft’s operating income improved 17 percent to $3.89 billion for the quarter from $3.33 billion last year.

Microsoft’s stock fell more than 10 percent after the news to around $24.27 per share.
