With help from ANB, Leap expands into San Antonio

SAN DIEGO—Residents of San Antonio will be able to add Cricket to their list of wireless service choices, starting tomorrow.

Leap Wireless International Inc. and Alaska Native Broadband 1 License, L.L.C. said they plan to begin offering Leap’s Cricket service with four retail stores in San Antonio and about 70 indirect retailers in the market. ANB—which holds nine spectrum licenses including San Antonio, El Paso, Austin and Bryan, Texas, acquired during Auction 58—is a subsidiary of a joint venture between Cricket Communications Inc. and Alaska Native Broadband L.L.C.

“The launch of Cricket service in San Antonio is the first of a planned series of launches in the central Texas region and underscores our strategic growth initiatives in the Southwest market,” said Doug Hutcheson, president and chief executive officer of Leap. “We look forward to creating a new cluster of markets in central Texas to provide greater value to our growing family of wireless customers.”

The companies plan to have nearly a month of events and celebrations to kick off the service launch and promote the Cricket brand in San Antonio, including tethered hot air balloon rides, a salute to the military, and the company’s presence at local cultural festivals.
