SANTA ANNA, Calif.—Powerwave Technologies Inc. said it is in talks with U.K.-based Filtronic plc to buy the company’s power amplifier businesses, which is part of its Wireless Infrastructure division.
Neither company provided further details, saying only, “There can be no certainty that these negotiations will result in any transaction being completed.”
Powerwave designs, manufactures and markets antennas, boosters, combiners, filters, repeaters, multi-carrier RF power amplifiers and tower-mounted amplifiers for cellular, PCS and third-generation networks.
Filtronic’s other two operational divisions include Defense Electronics and Compound Semiconductors units. The company hit hard times in January as its chief executive, John Roulston, resigned after the company posted year-end net losses of $9.9 million, a disappointing swing from the same period in 2004 when the company reported net income of $6.2 million.
Within the wireless infrastructure industry, widespread consolidation among vendors seems imminent as pricing wars and other market forces expose weaknesses.
