Study: 2 million Americans watched mobile TV in Q1

SAN FRANCISCO—The average U.S. mobile TV subscriber spends $40 a month more on wireless services than non-mobile TV users, according to new figures from Telephia.

The research firm, which announced its first wireless TV user panel, said more than 2 million U.S. wireless users—1.4 percent of mobile consumers—subscribed to a mobile video plan during the first quarter of 2006. African-Americans and Hispanics were particularly well-represented among wireless video fans: While each demographic represents about 10 percent of all U.S. mobile users, 23 percent of mobile TV subscribers were Hispanic, and 19 percent were African-American.

“The early popularity of mobile TV with these groups continues the demographic trend we see in the adoption of all advanced mobile data services,” said Sid Gorham, Telephia’s chief executive officer. “Mobile TV will allow marketers to reach this audience with a wide range of innovative advertising and commerce approaches.”
