U.S. Cellular to use Qualcomm’s uiOne for handsets

SAN DIEGO—U.S. Cellular Corp. signed on to use Qualcomm Inc.’s BREW-based handset customization interface, uiOne.

Qualcomm’s uiOne is already in use at Sprint Nextel Corp, the nation’s third-largest carrier with more than 40 million subscribers, and at Alltel Corp., the nation’s fifth-largest carrier with more than 10 million subscribers. U.S. Cellular is the nation’s sixth-largest wireless carrier with more than 5 million subscribers.

Qualcomm explained that uiOne allows either carriers or mobile phone users to customize the look and feel of their devices with themes via downloadable motifs. The offering essentially changes the look and feel of a phone’s software interface.

“U.S. Cellular is committed to finding innovative ways to drive customer satisfaction,” said Alan D. Ferber, vice president of marketing and sales operations at U.S. Cellular.

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
