SunCom in final phase of network upgrade

CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Regional carrier SunCom Wireless Holdings Inc. said it has started the final phase in upgrading its network from TDMA to GSM, and plans to give its remaining TDMA customers a free handset to help ease the transition.

According to SunCom, about 64,000 of its 1 million customers still rely on TDMA technology; SunCom serves the Southeastern U.S. and Caribbean.

SunCom has been working since 2003 to upgrade its network to GSM. The final phase is expected to be complete by Oct. 1. The company is touting benefits of the new network such as increased variety of handsets and rate plans and improved network performance for data services.
