JoVoGo buys Wi-Fi network in Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, La.—Wireless Internet company JoVoGo Communications L.L.C. said it purchased the public Wi-Fi system operating in the central business district of downtown Baton Rouge from US Wireless Online.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The Wi-Fi system was built in 2003 by Verge Wireless and later sold to US Wireless Online. It has been offered as a free service, but JoVoGo said it is exploring advertising, user fees and sponsored content to score revenues from the service. The company also said users who require large amounts of bandwidth or secured access to a corporate office will be charged a fee.

JoVoGo said it plans to update the system to improve speeds and coverage. The company also said it plans to expand service outside Baton Rouge.
