Leap digs down into Texas

SAN DIEGO—Leap Wireless International Inc. expanded its presence in Texas, launching its Cricket-branded service in Austin, Temple and Killeen.

The company is teaming with Alaska Native Broadband L.L.C. to offer service to 1.5 million new potential customers in the three-city region in central Texas. Four Cricket stores and 50 indirect retailers will carry the offering, which uses spectrum ANB won last year during Auction 58.

Cricket customers in the area now have a calling area spanning 3,200 square miles including central Texas and the San Antonio metro area; Leap also offers service in Houston and Bryan/College Station. With the expansion, Cricket covers roughly 40 million POPs nationwide. The company is targeting the urban youth market with its prepaid wireless service.

“We, together with our joint venture ANB, look forward to providing Cricket’s low-cost, high-value services to Central Texans seeking a value-based alternative to traditional wireless services,” said Doug Hutcheson, Leap’s chief executive officer.
