SAN JOSE, Calif.—Nomad Digital Ltd. and train operator Caltrain said they completed proof of concept trials of a WiMAX technology that can deliver continuous high-speed Internet access to train passengers.
The trial was conducted along 16 miles of track between the Millbrae and Palo Alto train stations in California’s Silicon Valley. The technology was tested at speeds up to 79 miles per hour with several passengers simultaneously using high-speed data services.
Nomad’s system links the train to trackside wireless base stations. Radios are located every few miles along the track, said the company.
Caltrain said in addition to passenger usage, the network allows for train performance monitoring, real-time security tools and fleet location capabilities. The company plans to extend the technology throughout its 80 mile route from Gilroy to San Francisco.
Nomad has deployed wireless systems for railway systems in the United Kingdom and Holland.
