SHENZHEN, China—Chinese telecom equipment manufacturer ZTE Corp. launched a dual-mode TD-SCDMA/GSM handset.
The U350 model features dual standby capability, which allows users to put a call in one mode on hold to take a separate call in the other mode. The company also makes a CDMA/GSM dual-mode, dual-standby device, the H500.
The handset is notable because the Chinese government is gearing up to issue third-generation licenses to the country’s wireless operators. Industry watchers expect the licenses to cover the country’s home-grown TD-SCDMA technology as well as W-CDMA and CDMA EV-DO.
Thus, dual-mode devices such as ZTE’s U350 could play a role in the country’s wireless development.
