ARLINGTON, Va.—The Washington Post Co. is the latest old-school news company to go mobile, unveiling wireless Internet sites for three of its high-profile products.
The company launched wireless versions of its online offerings from The Washington Post newspaper, Newsweek magazine and Slate, a daily online publication. The free WAP sites—which use a mobile-specific URL, but not the new .mobi domain—feature optimized content for handheld devices and are available from any Internet-capable mobile phone.
The company said it will add alerts, e-mail capability and additional photos to the sites in coming weeks. Microsoft Corp.’s Windows Mobile is sponsoring the effort.
“We see an enormous demand for information and entertainment among an increasingly mobile public, and we are pleased to be at the forefront of meeting that demand,” said Caroline Little, chief executive officer of Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive.
While television networks such as CNN and The Weather Channel have pursued wireless users aggressively, some of the nation’s largest print media outlets are only just beginning to embrace the mobile phone. The New York Times launched a mobile version of its Web site earlier this month, and Time Magazine recently unveiled a WAP site with links to its blogs and other content.
