Nokia and Microsoft buddy up for mobile searches

ESPOO, Finland—Nokia Corp.’s Mobile Search platform will incorporate Microsoft Corp.’s Live Search capabilities to streamline mobile information searches on Nseries smart phones—now “multimedia computers,” in Nokia’s parlance—and select S60 platform devices in various markets, the Finnish handset vendor announced today.

Mobile Search resides on Nokia devices’ menu, allowing users to get results quicker than if they had to use the phone’s Web browser to first locate an Internet service provider’s page to launch a search. Microsoft’s Windows Live Search is designed to facilitate information searches across various platforms and allow users to create preferences for the pages they often visit, personalizing their search habits.

Today’s announcement noted that Nokia devices able to use the Microsoft Live Search will be the N80 Internet Edition, N73, N93, N70, N71, 6630, 6680, 6681 and as a free download for select devices running the S60 platform. The announcement did not specify the markets in which Live Search would be available.

The collaboration is a reflection of efforts among handset vendors, platform providers and Internet search firms to mobilize the Web without compromising the experience for users in developed countries accustomed to the use of wired PCs.
