EBay shoppers get shot at CDMA/iDEN phone

DENVER—Where should cell-phone enthusiasts go for the latest in handset technology? EBay, it appears.

An eBay shopper recently purchased a dual-mode CDMA/iDEN phone from Motorola Inc. for $300. Sold by “Rager4208,” the phone is dubbed the “Sprint Nextel Hybrid ic502” and offers “Walkie-Talkie, Off Network Walkie-Talkie on the Nextel network and 1900 MHz CDMA for making calls in Sprint network or CDMA roaming,” according to the listing on eBay. The phone sold for $300. Only one bid was placed on the phone.

Sprint Nextel does not currently sell the phone, nor does Motorola. However, the carrier reiterated its promise to sell a dual-mode CDMA/iDEN phone by the fourth quarter. The carrier declined to give any more details on the planned phone, including how much it will cost.

Unfortunately for “M7071,” the eBay shopper who purchased the ic502 phone, Sprint Nextel said it only provides service on its network for devices “that have been tested and certified,” said a carrier spokeswoman.
