Leap to launch in San Diego and Portland, Ore.

SAN DIEGO-Leap Wireless International Inc. plans to launch its Cricket wireless service in its hometown of San Diego on Dec. 6 and in Portland, Ore. on Dec. 12, according to the carrier’s Web site.
The two markets are among the 25 largest in the United States. Leap executives recently indicated that the carrier’s newly expanded spectrum portfolio will enable it to serve about 35 of the nation’s top 100 domestic markets. Leap will be well on its way toward that goal with the launch of San Diego and Portland, servicing around two dozen of the top 100 markets.
“With the launch of service in San Diego and Portland, Leap will have completed the launch of all 14 Auction 58 markets within an impressive timeframe of less than one year,” said Raymond James analyst Ric Prentiss in a research note. He added that next year “is shaping up to be quieter on the market-launch front,” although he still expects to see Leap launches in Rochester, N.Y. and in the Carolinas.
