AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands-Nokia Corp. and Yahoo Inc. extended their partnership to include Yahoo services on three new Nokia handsets running on the handset vendor’s Series 40 platform.
The two companies have been working together since April 2005 to “establish an optimal Internet experience, including search, for users on their mobile devices.” The placement of Yahoo services on the Nokia devices was described by the two companies as “a further expansion of a strong partnership between leading players in their respective domains.”
The Nokia 6300, 5200 and 5300 XpressMusic devices all will offer services including Yahoo Mail and Messenger, an instant messaging application. Nokia said those services, as well as the “ability to synchronize Yahoo contacts, tasks and calendar on the PC and phone” would be added to more Series 40 devices.
Kai Oistamo, executive vice president and general manager of mobile phones for Nokia, said that the company has sold more than 400 million Series 40 devices since 2002.
“Our extended partnership with Nokia will allow tens of millions of people to access their favorite Yahoo services on the move,” said Marco Boerries, Yahoo’s senior vice president of connected life. “Yahoo is looking forward to continuing to work with Nokia to bring users compelling mobile Internet services on an even wider range of handsets.”
Nokia’s Series 40 platform is a mobile phone operating system designed for mid-range devices. The platform is not open to developers. Nokia’s Series 60 platform, which is based on the Symbian operating system, supports additional capabilities and is open to developers.
