Weekly infrastructure awards wrap-up

The following list details this week’s infrastructure awards for the cellular, Wi-Fi and WiMAX industries. The contracts are broken down by transmission technology, country and vendor. The value of the contract is included when available.

Cellular

France: Orange France launched HSDPA services in Toulouse and Bordeaux using equipment provided by Nokia Corp.

Indonesia: Nokia said it won a contract to supply W-CDMA 3G/HSPA equipment and managed services to Indosat.

Poland: Nokia said it provided equipment to Polkomtel for the carrier’s launch of an HSDPA network in the Warsaw area.

Russia: Mobile Telesystems awarded an equipment upgrade and services contract to Motorola Inc. to improve quality, capacity and performance of the carrier’s network in its Moscow macro region.

United States: Nokia said it signed an agreement with T-Mobile USA Inc. to supply third-generation wireless equipment and services for the carrier’s W-CDMA rollout. L.M. Ericsson also won part of T-Mobile USA’s W-CDMA business. Also in the United States, Alcatel said it won Cingular Wireless L.L.C.’s business for its multiservice transport solution for IP-based HSDPA services.

Yemen: Motorola signed an agreement with SabaFon to increase coverage and capacity of the carrier’s GSM network.
Wi-Fi

Europe: Proxim Wireless Corp. said its Wi-Fi access points have been deployed at two European Microsoft educational conferences, the Tech-Ed: Developers and Tech-Ed: IT Forum. The products also are being used to support the inaugural Convergence 2006 conference.

United Kingdom: Motorola said it will supply infrastructure equipment and services for six municipal Wi-Fi networks in the United Kingdom for BT Group plc’s Wireless City initiatives.

United States: Cisco Systems Inc. provided a municipal Wi-Fi network to the city of Albany, N.Y.
Miscellaneous

Iraq: Fixed line carrier Iraq Telecommunications & Post Corp. awarded Nortel Networks a contract valued at $20 million to build a nationwide optical backbone to deliver high-bandwidth data , video and multimedia services for personal and business communications.

Kuwait: Mobile Telecommunications Company said it is delivering high-speed mobile services using an optical solution provided by Nortel Networks.

Pakistan: UTStarcom Inc. announced a distribution contract with Maxim Telecom.
