Google Inc. introduced a new version of its Maps application for Windows Mobile-based smartphones. The application is available for download on Google’s Web site. Users must download the application using a desktop computer and then transfer the application to their smartphone using Microsoft Corp.’s ActiveSync synchronization technology.
The move is notable as Google continues to expand its mobile efforts. Indeed, during the company’s most recent quarterly conference call, Google executives discussed the importance of mobile to the company’s overall strategy. The company said it expected to see notable revenues from its mobile efforts starting next year.
Google’s Maps application, which is available for free, allows cellphone and smartphone users to view detailed road maps, as well as satellite images, and is based on the company’s popular Maps and Earth service for desktop computer users.
The mobile version of Maps is available for Java cellphones and Palm operating system-based smartphones. The Windows Mobile version of the application is the latest iteration of the application.
