Hedge*hog*ing v. Interrupting conversations in an office environment by poking your head over the top of the cube.
–If you are one of the 12 people who haven’t yet viewed Stephen Colbert’s history of the new AT&T Inc., please go to Youtube.com to watch it. Colbert basically explains how Ma Bell was broken up to become Ma Bell. Even though this is a few weeks old, we’re still laughing. We even tried to interview Mr. Colbert to find out just how he or his staff came up with the idea-but no luck.
–More coveted than a SuperBowl trophy or J.D. Power award, is the phrase “We’re No. 1” among wireless carriers. Verizon Wireless, fresh off of outstanding Q4 numbers, said it remains the nation’s No. 1 carrier in terms of revenue and retail customers and for wireless data provider by revenues. Cingular Wireless, of course, is No. 1 in terms of total subscribers. But Alltel Corp. would like them both to remember it is No. 1 in terms of geographic coverage. Does that mean Sprint Nextel Corp. is No. 1 in terms of technologies? (We’ve got your iDEN, your CDMA, your WiMAX-well not yet, but we will.) Along these lines, Verizon Wireless wants everyone to know it could have had the iPhone, but turned it down. Really, does the Federal Communications Commission need to spend any more money on those “Is wireless competitive?” reports. The resounding answer is yes, the wireless industry is competitive-competitive like a Texas high-school cheerleader’s mother!
–And speaking of the iPhone, what exactly was Steven Jobs thinking when he decided to use that name, even though Cisco owns the trademark to it? Here are a few possibilities “Our lawyers are smarter than your lawyers.” Or “Our name is different from Cicso’s name. Cisco’s is followed by the little TM in the corner. Ours, not so much.”
–Caribbean carrier Digicel announced it launched mobile TV services in Jamaica . running over the carrier’s GPRS network. We know they’re pretty laid back in Jamaica, but doubt mobile TV over GPRS is going to fly. Have you ever tried to watch a video service over a 2.5G connection? It’s like watching a slideshow with an audio commentary. Very annoying.
–A company called BoxWave is selling a new cellphone accessory called a “screen puff.” According to the company, this $3 item “is made of non-abrasive and lint-free material that can clean your screen easily and quickly.” You read that right, it’s a tiny towel to wipe all your face grease off your phone. Mike Dano’s going to buy five of these wonderful little items because. wait for it. he has a lot of FACE GREASE.
