Infrastructure awards wrap-up: Motorola, Alcatel-Lucent, Nokia and more

The following list details this week’s infrastructure awards for the cellular, Wi-Fi and WiMAX industries. The contracts are broken down by transmission technology, country and vendor. The value of the contract is included when available.

    Cellular

  • Bangladesh: Motorola Inc. said it won a four-year, full-operations and managed services contract from Warid Telecom for its GSM and Canopy networks in major cities and sub-districts in the eastern part of the country.
  • Bulgaria: Mobiltel selected Alcatel-Lucent to upgrade and enhance its wireless network with the company’s GSM/EDGE radio controller platform.
  • Isle of Man: Alcatel-Lucent and Manx Telecom said they deployed a 3G UMTS and HSDPA network in the 900 MHz band.
  • Poland: Cyfrowy Polsat, a satellite television broadcaster, is launching an MVNO service in the country and has chosen Nokia Corp. as its core network supplier.
    WiMAX
  • Caribbean: Scarlet B.V. has contracted with Navini Networks to upgrade its current Navini-based wireless broadband network to the Mobile WiMAX 802.16e standard.
  • Yemen: Proxim Wireless Corp. said Nexen Petroleum selected the company’s WiMAX product family to support oil field expansion in its Canadian East Al-Hajr oilfield operations. The network will support transmission of SCADA information, backhaul security and surveillance cameras as well as providing intranet access to field service crews and remote monitoring and maintenance.
    Wi-Fi
  • Italy: Alcatel-Lucent said Tecnofin Immobiliare has awarded it, along with several subcontractors, a contract to supply and integrate an urban Wi-Fi network in the province of Trento.
    Miscellaneous
  • Algeria: Algerie Telecom has chosen Siemens to supply infrastructure for a wireless local area networks that will be used by business customers.
  • Australia: Ceragon Networks Ltd. said The Department of Human Services in the city of Melbourne is deploying Ceragon’s wireless broadband products for a wireless closed circuit TV network in Melbourne’s public housing project.
  • India: Idea Cellular Ltd. announced a 10-year business transformation agreement with IBM that calls for the computer giant to upgrade the carrier’s business processes and IT infrastructure. The deal could amount to between $600 million and $800 million.
  • Russia: Alvarion Ltd. said broadband wireless service provider Enforta will use its broadband wireless access solution to expand its national broadband network in Voronezh, Lipetsk, Penza, Samara, Tula and Yaroslav.
  • Spain: Telefonica SA is using Nortel Networks‘ IMS-ready solution to power its Mobile Attendant service.
  • United States: Motorola Inc. said it is working together with the Los Angeles Police Department to build a municipal wireless network and video surveillance system in the city’s Jordan Downs public housing complex. Motorola also announced that the city of Kissimmee, Fla., has deployed its HotZone Duo and Mesh Enabled Architecture networks for municipal wireless connectivity. Also in the United States, 5G Wireless said it is assuming network management duties at the Powhatan Plantation, a time share resort located near colonial Williamsburg.
