Napster announced a deal to bring on-demand subscription music services to Motorola Inc.’s entire line of cellphones.
The digital music company said it will work with Motorola to promote the mobile music offerings in North America, the United Kingdom and Germany. The companies will offer a free month of the Napster To Go subscription service through in-box and aftermarket promotions as well as through retail and carrier channels.
While some U.S. wireless service providers are sure to embrace the offering-AT&T Mobility already partners with Napster on a full-track mobile music service-others are sure to view the move as a threat. Both Sprint Nextel Corp. and Verizon Wireless target music lovers with carrier-branded storefronts in an effort to become a kind of mobile iTunes.
“Motorola’s powerful global brand image, music-enabled handset portfolio and exceptional market positions present tremendous potential for Napster to further deepen and broaden its global presence,” said Napster CEO Chris Gorog. “We are very pleased to announce this new global relationship which supports our focus on driving adoption of our subscription model by attaching to music-enabled cellphones, which are expected to become the dominant device for portable music over the next few years.”
