Mobile payment startup Obopay Inc. announced a distribution deal that secures space on the deck of Verizon Wireless, the nation’s No. 2 carrier.
The Redwood City, Calif.-based payment company unveiled a BREW-enabled version of its flagship application that allows users to send and receive money from mobile phones. Verizon Wireless subscribers can create stand-alone banking accounts and transfer funds to other wireless users from their phones; the service also uses a pre-paid MasterCard for retail purchases.
The application will be available “in the coming weeks” through the carrier’s Get It Now catalog, according to a spokesman, and will eventually be offered through Verizon Wireless’ mobile Web service. The company charges 10 cents for each “sent” transaction; users can receive money or make withdrawals for no charge.
Obopay offers text message and WAP services in addition to its downloadable applications, enabling mobile subscribers to use the service regardless of device or carrier. The company also has deals with mobile virtual network operators Amp’d Mobile Inc. and Helio L.L.C. and the financial behemoth Citi.
