A Polish bus driver was fired for using his company cellphone to try to win a contest, according to an Associated Press report. Leszek Wojcik sent 38,000 text messages-1,200 a day-at a cost of about 86 cents per message. He racked up $34,000 in charges in his bid to win the $36,000 SMS contest. A group of students at New York University are working on an application sure to turn any brown thumb green. A Reuters report said the students are developing an application that would alert people when their plants need water or are overwatered. The project, called “Botanicalls” uses a moisture sensor placed in the plant’s soil. The sensor sends a signal to a gateway when the soil is too moist or too dry, and then a call is placed to the plant’s owner with a recorded message. The messages are personalized for each variety of plant, including a voice with a Scottish accent for Scots Moss and a cheerful voice for spider plants. The application also sends a thank you message when the plant has been watered.
