In the Byzantine world of handset pricing, intrigue is the name of the game.
What to read into the latest handset price gyrations? Our guess: largely price cuts to pique consumer interest during the coming dog days of summer.
AT&T Mobility discounted its Nokia Corp. N75 and its Motorola Inc. Krzr to $100; both began life this past spring at $200 and dropped to $150 before last week’s price drop.
Verizon Wireless last week offered its LG Electronics Co. Ltd. VX9400 mobile TV phone at $100; the handset had bounced back-and-forth from its original $200 to $100 and back to $200 before last week’s offer.
Sprint Nextel Corp. dangled before consumers both the LG Muziq handset, now $80 (down from $100), and Sanyo Katana II, which sold last week at $30. The Katana II has seen a steady drop in price since its launch in late June; Sprint took it from $100 to $50 to its current price.
T-Mobile USA Inc. made no pricing changes on its handsets last week.
Leap Wireless International Inc. bid for attention by knocking $30 off seven out of its eight handset offerings; most were Motorola models.
