Margins Check: Google’s TV, the advertising Super Bowl, video calling and more

Editor’s Note: Welcome to On the Margins, a feature for RCR Wireless News’ new weekly e-mail service, Mobile Content and Culture. Every week, the RCR Wireless News staff considers events in the wider business world and how they could affect the wireless industry.
–Google announced a deal to receive TV statistics from Nielsen. The move has a number of ramifications, but could portend a merging of TV and online marketing. Thus, wireless may well take heed of Google’s moves into the TV market, as a number of mobile players are making the same effort.
–Fox only has a few more commercials left to sell for the Super Bowl, according to Advertising Age, months before the actual event. The popularity of the football spectacle-generally one of the most-watched items on TV all year-could stand as a major opportunity for any wireless firm looking to mobilize elements of the advertising that will undoubtedly surround the event.
–Along with partner Logitech, Internet video calling firm Skype announced a new, higher-quality video calling standard for Internet communications. The announcement highlights the continuing importance of digital video, as well as the quality of such video. Indeed, such advancements may well make their way to mobile, where players are keen to woo subscribers with crystal-clear content.
–A Virginian court blocked new rules from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office that would reduce the number of times a patent applicant can contest or amend rejected or pending patent claims. The court’s ruling could stall the new rules, which could affect a number of wireless companies. Thus, the wireless industry, which is steeped in patents, would do well to watch the issue closely.
