Virgin Mobile USA Inc. said it deployed a product from Telespree Communications that automates the mobile virtual network operator’s handset programming process via over-the-air technology.
“With Telespree, we focused on the device programming process, eliminating manual entry and any associated errors, creating an even simpler and more convenient consumer experience,” said James Gamm, VP of information technology for Virgin Mobile USA. He added that “customers can purchase a cool, new phone and get it programmed quickly, allowing them to begin using service immediately after activation without any hassles.”
Virgin Mobile USA is using Telespree’s technology for programming new devices as well as for changes or upgrades made to phones by existing users; it first was incorporated into Virgin Mobile USA’s handsets in the third quarter of this year, and the MVNO plans to use the OTA product in all of its new handsets.
The self-service platform does not require manual inputs or assistance from customer care agents and helps wireless operators cut costs, according to Telespree.
Such technology is becoming widespread in the U.S. wireless market; Sprint Nextel Corp. employs OTA technology to update software on its phones, and Verizon Wireless recently introduced a similar service.
