Full data on how various handsets and carriers fared during the holiday shopping season awaits collection and analysis. Various firms will report their definitive views in late January, early February.
Based on Compete Inc.’s measure of online shopping in November, as the quarter revved up, however, an intriguing portrait emerged of hot handsets.
Compete looked at the “most shopped” devices on carriers’ Web sites last month. Among “handsets,” LG Electronics Co. Ltd.’s Voyager at Verizon Wireless ($300) received the most interest, surpassing Apple Inc.’s iPhone at AT&T Mobility ($400), which came in at No. 4. The other three, most-researched handsets were all at T-Mobile USA Inc.: The Web-savvy sought info on the Motorola Inc. developed Sidekick Slide ($200) at No. 2, the Samsung Electronics Co Ltd. t629 (“free”) at No. 3 and the Sharp Electronics developed Sidekick LX in blue ($300) at No. 5.
Among “smartphones,” the iPhone was No. 1, and apparently that drew a lot of smartphone-seeking traffic to AT&T Mobility’s Web site. The Pantech Corp. Duo ($200) at the carrier ranked No. 2, and the Motorola Q Global ($200) ranked No. 5. The Research In Motion Ltd. BlackBerry Pearl at the four largest carriers ranked No. 3. Samsung’s i760 ($300) at Verizon Wireless ranked No. 4.
