Mobiles for the masses
The new head of Cuba’s government, President Raul Castro, said ordinary Cuban citizens will now be allowed to use cellphones, according to the Associated Press. Mobile phone service was previously only available to people who worked in the government or for foreign companies. However, service is likely to still be out of reach for most ordinary citizens for awhile. Cuba’s telecommunications monopoly, Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Cuba SA, said it will allow the general public to sign prepaid contracts in Cuban Convertible Pesos, which are worth 24 times the regular pesos Cuban state employees earn. The carrier said the Convertible Pesos program will allow it improve its networks and eventually offer its services in the more affordable regular pesos.

Tour de Grammy
T-Mobile USA Inc. is sponsoring the 50th Grammy Celebration Concert Tour in partnership with The Recording Academy. The tour will provide fans and TMobile USA Sidekick users exclusive access to a concert tour featuring Grammy nominees and winners. The five-city tour kicks off April 3 in Chicago with a performance by John Legend. Other stops on the tour are New York, Miami, Dallas and Los Angeles.

Cruisin’ for airtime
SeaMobile Enterprises, which provides at-sea communications and connectivity services, said it won a multiyear contract extension from Royal Caribbean Cruises. The deal calls for the company to provide its MTN VSAT satellite communications services for all Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Cruises ships. SeaMobile’s system provides C Band communications services for passengers and additional communication services for crew members.
