Q: What is Motorola’s vision of a connected home?
A: Motorola’s vision for the “connected home” removes the traditional boundaries of the home’s walls. Within the home, we provide the flexibility to consume content where and when it’s convenient by time and place shifting media to any screen. Having a connected home also advances the way people connect outside the four walls. Motorola is accelerating the personal media experience with our concept of media mobility. This means the ability to take personalized content on the go, enabled by ubiquitous high speed broadband networks.
Q: When will this vision transition to actual service? Which areas will launch first?
A: In many areas, we’re already making this vision a reality. In the home, where the current content experience begins for many consumers, we’re a global leader in set-top boxes. We’re shifting many users’ experiences away from “prime time” TV to “my time” with advanced DVR and video-on-demand technologies. In addition, we offer solutions such as FollowMeTV and IPTV that enable content to be moved from screen to screen. To begin taking content experiences on the go, Motorola has already launched a mobile TV device portfolio that takes advantage of existing standards to deliver high-quality, personalized TV and media anytime, anywhere. Finally, we’re working with our service provider customers around the world to develop next-generation network infrastructures. These will allow them to take advantage of new products and services that will ultimately support new revenue-generating services and applications while differentiating their offerings.
Q: What wireless technologies will enable this vision?
A:We’re working extensively with next generation network and device technologies such as WiMAX, LTE and femtocells to deliver the infrastructure required to extend the reach of content both inside and outside the home. Delivering high performance, wireless broadband networks delivers the promise of media mobility. Motorola is driving the global adoption of WiMAX with nearly 80 WiMAX engagements with customers in 43 countries around the world and has contracts with 19 of them for commercial WiMAX systems. We’re also working with our service provider customers to develop LTE solutions that will take advantage of its simple architecture and enhanced performance capabilities. We continue to add products to our femtocell portfolio that deliver low-cost, low-power cellular access points that connect to a consumer’s existing broadband service providing higher-quality and higher-performance wireless voice and real-time data services inside the home. All of these cost-effective, high-capacity wireless broadband solutions are creating a sense of broadband everywhere, a core component of the media mobility vision enabling consumers unprecedented access to content and services at home or on the go — whenever they need it.
Q: What do you mean by media mobility?
A: Media mobility is, quite simply, having access to content — videos, data, and images — anytime, anywhere and on any device. Enabling that experience seamlessly and effortlessly isn’t quite as simple, but we’ve strategically grown our Motorola Home & Networks Mobility portfolio and aligned our expertise to deliver on this vision. Our approach is to help our service provider partners accelerate the delivery of personal media experiences to consumers in virtually any environment by enabling broadband everywhere, or high-speed connectivity that is as ever-present as air; by optimizing networks to ensure networks can handle the creation and sharing of everything from user-generated video to HD content; and ultimately by delivering content to consumers in ways that makes media of all kinds portable, secure and personalized.
Q: What’s Motorola’s role in enabling that mobility?
A: Our role is to deliver the technologies, products and services that will make media mobility a reality and provide benefits to everyone in the value chain, from consumers to service providers to broadcasters and programmers. Motorola has been a leader in video delivery for more than 50 years and offers the latest in IPTV, HD, compression, and on demand solutions. We’re leading development and deployment for the most advanced wireless network technologies across the globe. Lastly, we’re working with customers to help optimize their delivery networks and user devices with the latest solutions to expand bandwidth, manage complexity and build personalized services that enable new revenue generation.
