WiMAX operator Global Mobile Corp. has tapped NextWave Wireless Inc. for a joint technology field trial to build a suite of next generation multimedia services using the vendor’s WiMAX equipment.
The Taiwanese operator will use NextWave’s MXtv technology for mobile television, interactive media services and digital audio. It will also use a network kit from NextWave.
“A significant goal of our technology collaboration with NextWave Wireless is to establish a leadership position in delivering next-generation, WiMAX-based mobile multimedia services to end-users; further extending our international competitiveness in the WiMAX field,” Rosemary Ho, chairwoman of Global Mobile Corp., said in a prepared statement.
The trial was announced shortly after the formation of Consortium of Mobile Broadband, a group organized to facilitate the development of WiMAX in Taiwan.
The news follows announcements from Alcatel-Lucent and Huawei Technologies USA outlining their plans to integrate NextWave’s MXtv technology into their WiMAX offerings.
