Brightstar Corp., which has successfully played the handset distribution game, has decided to pursue the accessories market by establishing a standalone company – Brightstar Accessories – headquartered in Miami.
The company is attempting to catch a market estimated by ABI Research to create $40 billion in revenue this year, and double that four years hence.
Former Jabra president, Morten Steen-Jorgensen, has been named president and CEO of the new outfit.
Steen-Jorgensen cited accessories’ role in revenue growth and consumer satisfaction as driving his interest.
Brightstar Accessories will focus its activities on North America, Latin America, Asia-Pacific and Australia, with plans to expand to Europe, the company said.
The company said it would leverage its global footprint in handset distribution, supplier agreements and worldwide customer base to help its customers drive sales among its carrier customers.
According to ABI Research, Brightstar Accessories has its work cut out for it. Motorola Inc., GN/Jabra, Plantronics, Nokia Corp. and Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications may hold as much as 85% of the accessories market. But numerous smaller firms seem to be exploiting the remaining 15% of the market, so opportunity abounds.
This is particularly true of accessory vendors and distributors that forge deals with handset distributors, for bundling opportunities, according to ABI – an area where Brightstar appears to have a built-in advantage heading to market.
