MetroPCS: Bring us your existing, compatible phones

Regional wireless carrier MetroPCS Communications Inc. announced a new promotion, MetroFlash, that will allow shoppers with a compatible CDMA handset to connect to the MetroPCS network; users will be able to sign up for MetroPCS service without having to buy a new phone. The carrier said it would offer a one free month of service to those bringing in their own phones.
“Offering consumers the ability to join MetroPCS with their existing handset makes switching carriers easier – and more cost efficient – than ever,” said Tom Keys, Chief Operating Officer of MetroPCS.
MetroPCS’ offer comes amidst a notable hue and cry – from Skype, Google Inc. and others – for open wireless networks. Indeed, the Federal Communications Commission place open-access stipulations on a third of the 700 MHz spectrum it auctioned earlier this year, and Verizon Wireless (a fellow CDMA carrier to MetroPCS) late last year announced plans to open its network to all compatible devices and applications.
However, it’s unclear whether carriers’ moves toward openness – MetroPCS now included – will mollify critics of the industry’s current structure.
MetroPCS said users can visit MetroPCS-owned stores, dealers or visit its Web site to check on different handsets’ compatibility. With about 4.5 million subscribers nationwide, MetroPCS operates without contracts and offers plans ranging from about $30 to $50.
