Zed caps busy week with Lionsgate deal

Zed said it will work with Lionsgate to develop mobile entertainment projects based on the studio’s films.

The Spanish content titan will help create and distribute mobile video as well as ringtones, wallpaper and games from Lionsgate properties, and will develop wireless interactive communities centered on the content. Lionsgate lays claim to roughly 12,000 film and television titles – including “Dirty Dancing” and Showtime’s “Weeds” – and next year will launch a new cross-platform entertainment venture with partners Viacom, Paramount Pictures and MGM.

“This agreement truly represents the 21st century model of Hollywood entertainment evolving to serve new global distribution markets,” said Javier Perez Dolset, Zed’s founder and CEO. “I am confident we will significantly increase the success of the two enterprises.”

The news marked the end of a busy week for Zed, whose U.S. operations are based in Denver. The company also announced a pact to distribute content from the National Basketball Association to mobile users in North America, Asia and Europe, as well as the acquisition of Mobitween, a French developer of Flash-enabled games, for an undisclosed sum.
