Mike Wehrs took over the reins at the Mobile Marketing Association a few weeks ago and immediately was greeted with two fresh controversies.

The former Nuance Communications executive hadn’t settled in behind the CEO’s desk when he learned that consumer watchdog groups are calling for federal oversight of the nascent mobile marketing space. One day later, AT&T Mobility outraged some of its subscribers with an unsolicited text message plugging “American Idol,” forcing the MMA to intervene.

Wehrs dropped by the RCR Wireless studio to discuss the “American Idol” flap, the call for FTC intervention, and the outlook for mobile marketing in the midst of a plodding economy.
