BARCELONA, Spain – The world’s handset makers pulled out all the stops this year in their attempts to grab attention and generate interest in their products. At this year’s Mobile World Congress trade show, Nokia Corp., LG Electronics Co. Ltd., HTC Corp. and others released a bevy of new phones for the market.
The theme this year appeared to be touchscreens. Most of the new devices on display included the feature, and many included new user interfaces based on touch. Indeed, Microsoft Corp.’s new version of its Windows Mobile operating system included a number of touch-based features.
Although most of the phones announced during the show were bound for Europe, many will likely have variations destined for the U.S. market. Although handset makers at the show kept their plans for the U.S. market under tight wrap, they will likely be more forthcoming during next month’s CTIA show in Las Vegas.
