Cellular South to acquire Corr Wireless: Migration plans could include LTE

Carrier consolidation is not limited to just the big four, as Cellular South today announced plans to acquire Alabama-based Corr Wireless. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Cellular South said the deal will include more than 30,000 customers in 18 counties and network assets covering 1.3 million potential customers. Corr’s network covers the cities of Huntsville, Madison, Decatur, and Gadsden, plus the counties of Blount, Cullman, Marshall, Dekalb and Jackson in Alabama, as well as Rome, Georgia. Corr also currently counts 130 employees and 19 company-owned stores. Cellular South said those employees will stay on in the foreseeable future as the proposed deal works its way through government approval and the markets covered by Corr are outside Cellular South’s current operations.
Cellular South also said it was looking at eventually migrating Corr’s GSM-based network to LTE technology, a path it was also looking into for its CDMA-based operations. Cellular South’s regional network covers parts of Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida, with roaming agreements allowing the carrier to provide nationwide coverage to customers.
