Verizon Wireless, Sprint Nextel set for new smartphone launches: Storm 2, Pixi receive debut dates

With the holiday shopping season fast approaching, Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel Corp. announced additions to their handset portfolios.
The new CDMA-based smartphones follow recent launches from their GSM-based counterparts AT&T Mobility and T-Mobile USA Inc. highlighting the increasing emphasis carriers and device manufacturers are placing on the growing space.
Verizon Wireless said the updated Research In Motion Ltd. BlackBerry Storm 2 would be available later this week for $180 after all possible rebates. The device includes a new SurePress technology for its onscreen keyboard that is designed for easier use than the current Storm model. The new phone also includes RIM’s BlackBerry 5.0 operating system and built-in Wi-Fi capabilities to go along with support for Verizon Wireless’ CDMA2000 1x EV-DO Revision A network as well as international roaming on GSM/GPRS/EDGE/HSPA networks. The device is also packaged with a 16 gigabyte microSD card to supplement its 2 GB of onboard storage.
Sprint Nextel said the previously announced Palm Inc. Pixi would be available starting Nov. 15 for $100 after rebates. The device is a follow up to Palm’s Pre, which launched earlier this year on Sprint Nextel, and is targeted at those customers interested in Palm’s legacy Centro device. The Pixi sports Palm’s WebOS operating system and both a QWERTY keyboard and touchscreen. Customers selecting the device will also need to pick one of Sprint Nextel’s Everything Data plans that begin at $70 per month for individual plans.
The Pixi is seen as a critical device for Palm as the device manufacturers revamps its lineup based on its acclaimed WebOS that was introduced on the Pre.
