SanDisk Corp. said it has begun shipping its 32 gigabyte SanDisk microSDHC card, which the company says is the highest-capacity removable memory card available for mobile phones. The company said the card gives mobile users the storage they need for today’s storage-intensive features and can also allow carriers and handset manufacturers to give customers enough storage to match smartphone capabilities by bundling the card with their phones. The card is currently available online now, and worldwide retail availability is expected next month. The card is priced at $200 and comes with a five-year warranty.
Telit Wireless Solutions Inc. said its GE865-QUAD machine-to-machine module has been selected by Quake Global Inc., which makes satellite data modems for tracking applications. Quake will use the module to connect its industrial strength Q-Pro and Q4000 smart modems to cellular networks. The Q-Pro and Q4000 are designed for monitoring mobile assets. The Telit GE865-QUAD incorporates a quad-band GSM/GPRS chipset from Infineon and also features tape and reel packaging and an integrated TCP/IP protocol stack.
Telit also announced USA Technologies Inc., which provides networked transaction solutions to the vending industry, selected its GC864-Quad Module to allow for cellular communication in its ePort EDGE Cashless Payment System. The ePort EDGE device allows unattended point-of-sale terminals, including vending machines, washers and dryers and self-service car wash stations, to accept credit, debit and other forms of cashless payments.
The NGN/IMS Forum announced the formation of a new technical working group for applications running on fixed and mobile broadband networks. The group will focus on accelerating the availability of IMS-based applications by helping to create an ecosystem for developers, operators and vendors.
“Because of the explosion of applications, this Working Group and our upcoming Plugfest 9 will concentrate its efforts on application developers to help them better internetwork web 2.0 applications with IMS networks and BSS/OSS systems (including billing, charging and security),” said Michael Khalilian, chairman and president of the NGN/IMS Forum. “These efforts will bring the same level of interoperability enabled by our Plugfests from the realm of protocols, network architectures, hardware and devices to the software and applications space by including Application Programmable Interfaces (APIs) that expose network capabilities such as VoIP, group management, presence and instant messaging.”
Ringleader Digital, a mobile ad serving solution provider, announced partnerships with FlightStats and WhitePages. These two mobile publishers have integrated RLD’s SparkServer mobile third-party ad server, Media Stamp and RLD Network Manager mediation platform. The products give FlightStats and WhitePages real-time reporting, tracking and targeting capabilities.
iQmetrix offered visitors to its booth at CTIA Wireless 2010 the opportunity to experience digital media from a retail perspective. The company showcased its recently introduced Digital Media solutions, including a Microsoft Surface integrated with IQmetrix software RQ4. The Surface is a multi-touch computer that responds to natural hand gestures and objects. The booth also featured touch screens and explained how retailers can use interactive displays to allow customers to browse, shop and initiate transactions.
