Those with a sweet tooth are already craving a taste of Google’s upcoming Android build, Froyo, or the more officially named Android 2.2.
Luckily, to stave off the hunger, fan site
Phandroid has published some pictures of the upcoming operating system, running on an HTC Magic.
Froyo is rumored to be up for release as early as next month, so although the images aren’t confirmed, there’s a very high chance they’re real.
Possibly the most interesting detail gleaned from the leaked shots is that they seem to show automatic updating from within the Android Market, which would be rather nice for users who would no longer have to manually update their apps, as the phone would do it automatically.
Android users have been asking for this functionality for a while now, so if the pictures are accurate, it proves that someone at Google really is listening.
There is, however, a down side to automatic updating of apps, with some critics pointing out developers could take advantage of the system to force ads into their apps. Hackers could also use it to push malicious code directly onto a user’s device, without them knowing.
There is also some controversy over the images themselves, which were originally posted on the /g/ subforum of technology site 4chan.
The poster of the images raised a bit of a stink after realizing Phandroid had posted his pictures, demanding the site edit them to remove his handwriting from the page on which the phone is seen resting.
The poor disgruntled poster also claimed he would never have put the photos on the forum had he known someone was going to turn them into a story which could lead to his getting fired.
Let’s hope that doesn’t happen.
